Latest on Makenzie

This past Monday we went back to Duke for Makenzie's follow up and evaluation by speech therapy. Without going into detail the speech therapist discovered  a few things that need to be worked on and corrected with her eating and swallowing. So we have some new techniques to try and work on. She thinks Makenzie is doing certain things as a defense mechanism because she is so use to getting sick...it amazes me that at 10 months old a baby can already know to do that! Anyhow, we are working on things at meal time and will follow up with the speech therapist in a few weeks.

After the evaluation by speech therapy we headed upstairs to meet with Makenzie's GI doctor (who I love and am so thankful for). The intake nurse was getting all of Makenzie's vitals and stats and said that her blood pressure was high and we may have to see a heart Dr next. What?!?! This shocked me, but long story short after rechecking a couple times and the Dr listening to her heart the Dr and her nurses were confident everything was fine and the nurse was just being over cautious (thanks for that minor freak out). So back to the reasons we were there...overall things were ok. They were disappointed in her weight gain and she is still not caught up with her own curve which is the goal, but they were excited over her height increase. Honestly I was shocked she has only gained 12 ounces since her first appointment there back at the end of March. I seriously thought that she was up way more than that...she feels heavier for sure! So after seeing the the Dr, her nurse, and the nutritionist the plan is to continue on the medicine she was prescribed for her "Inappropriate Sphincter" (basically it is suppose to keep her from getting so sick) and try and add even more calories to her diet and we will reconvene in a few weeks to see where things are at. She still gets sick occasionally and has good days and bad, but because things have calmed down since being on the meds they want to continue on them at least until our next appointment. The Dr feels good about ruling out a lot of major stuff and for now just wants to give the meds a chance to do their job.

We will continue to do everything that we can to get her as healthy as can be no matter what it takes! She continues to be the sweetest and happiest baby and we are so thankful!!!
